The seminar, Old and New Empires: Education and Imperialism Across Time, took place in November 2024 at the University of Melbourne with support from the Theodore Fink Memorial Fund. The day began with presentations by Ritesh Shah and Sharon Walker, followed by Q&A. The presentations considered why a specific engagement with ’empire’ is relevant to current geopolitics and how contemporary forms of empire emerge through logics such as securitisation, bordering, saviourism and development. Themes from the conversation were captured in a graphic illustration.
